Rethinking Luxury Travel in PATA’s Tourism with Purpose Series

We recently filmed a short video about what The Luxury Signature stands for as part of Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose, a digital series by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in partnership with Content With Purpose. It pushed us to put some of these thoughts into words.

The Luxury Signature in PATA’s Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose series

When we started, The Luxury Signature was about the best of the best: the biggest villa, the highest price tag, the view that would look best on Instagram. That still holds true. But these days, the guests we welcome also want something deeper. They want authenticity. They want privacy and the chance to disappear for a while. More than anything, they want service that feels personal.

The shift beyond size and price

We’ve always pushed back on the idea that luxury can only be measured by size, price, or how impressive something looks on social media. Luxury has evolved, and it isn’t about being seen anymore. It’s become the opposite.

There’s also a common misconception that luxury travelers are all about showing off. In our experience, many of them are easygoing, down-to-earth people who live much like the rest of us. What sets them apart is how well traveled they are. They can immediately recognize what’s authentic, and can just as quickly tell when something feels made up. You can’t fake your way into their trust.

Why we chose not to chase scale

When my co-founder Sylvain Roullier and I built The Luxury Signature, we made a deliberate choice. We would protect the integrity of our guests’ experience rather than chase scale for the sake of scale.

That’s why every villa in our portfolio is personally inspected and service-tested. We want every guest’s experience to be seamless, from the first inquiry to the moment they check out. Being the bridge between exceptional properties and the guests who deserve them is a responsibility we take seriously.

It’s also why we believe in local experiences. In Thailand, for example, a traditional longtail boat can pick you up right in front of your villa. You can get a yacht anywhere in the world. A longtail boat, you can only get in Thailand. When you travel, enjoy what the locals have to offer.

Relationships before transactions

Everything we do affects the communities we operate in. We don’t believe in just taking on a property and walking away. We want to work with owners who care as much as we do, because that’s what gives us confidence our guests will be looked after.

Building that trust takes time. Sometimes months, sometimes a year. For us, it isn’t just business. It’s a relationship.

And there’s one thing we always tell owners: you can have the best villa on the island, but if you don’t get the service right, it will all be for nothing.

What I remember most

When I think back on the villas that stayed with me, they weren’t necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. They had something else. An atmosphere. A connection to the destination. A feeling that, for a little while, this was home.

That’s the kind of luxury we believe in, and it’s the kind we want every guest to find.

One more thing

If it helped, that’s the point.

I’m not expecting anything in return from this site. The best thing you can do with something here is use it, or pass it to someone else who’s climbing. And if you want to tell me it landed, I read every note, I just can’t promise a reply to each one.
